To the Editor:

As someone who has guided dozens of groups from around the nation on Study Tours of the Julia Richman Educaiton Complex (JREC) for the School Redesign Network at Stanford University, I was dismayed to read "Small Schools Show Concern Over Proposal to Swap Land" (6.26.2006).

Time after time, visiting teachers, principals and superintendents have marveled that "kids that look just like our kids" (i,e, students of color, English language learers, students from low-income families) are finding such success at JREC. Indeed, JREC is not only the jewel in New York City;s system, it is the crown jewel of urban secondary education in the United States. As such, it should be cherished, not torn down.

Sincerely,

Peter Ross
